Tanjung Puting National Park is located in Central Kalimantan in an area of 415,040 ha and includes several types of vegetation and inside is Camp Leakey, established in 1971 by Dr. Biruté Galdikas as a refuge for orangutans rescued from domestic capture. This is an important conservation area because it protects endangered Orangutan (Pongo Pygmeus) species that are known to live on only two islands: Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia. Other primate species like the long-nosed monkey and other many animals species also live in the park.

The park is occupied by 38 mammals including 9 primates: the Orangutans, Proboscis monkeys, long-tailed monkeys, pig-tailed macaque, Gibbons, leaf monkeys, slow lorises, Tarsiers, and there are also deer, Bornean bearded pig, leopards, dolphins, dugongs, 150 species fish, 200 species of birds, orchids, many reptiles and amphibians including crocodiles and more than 450 species of insects.
